I think this may be a 1950's underwater nuclear test. Looks like an old WW II vintage flat-top carrier floating next to it. They used to put ships at various distances from "ground zero" to see the effects of underwater nuclear blasts on ships.

That's no WW2 Carrier. It's got the angled-deck, and from the layout, I'd say it's from the Constellation / Kitty Hawk Class, which weren't retired until the end of the Cold War.

    LTF
Actually this is just a normal test that we conduct on all our ships. No big deal.
  • Anonymous coward on 2004-Oct-21 09:14:33 Anonymous coward said

    Tom
LTF is correct. It is called a shock test and all ships go through one to test for hull integrity and missile (things flying around loose) hazard.

Simple Shock test. As said before ALL ships go through this. Still it's pretty intense when you're onboard.

Yeah, that's just our standard "Drop a nuke fifty feet from the ship and see what happens" test. If the ship sinks, we don't use it anymore. If it still floats, it passes the test.

This is called Shock Trials for the USS Theodore Roosevelt CVN-71 (Nimitz Class). Not all ships go through this, normally one ship of the class. The Roosevelt was the first of the Nimitz class to be built modularly and needed to be tested for it's ability to handle near misses.

This looks like it was test 3 of 4. The charge was suspended 100 ft down and was the equivalent of 20,000 lbs of dynamite. And yes it was quite an experience.

That's why they didn't ask you. They already know that the carrier won't sink, and I'm sure all the hatches are closed to contain any leaks that do occur.

I think it is the USS AMERICA. Check out www.navsource.org/archives/02/66.htm
USS AMERICA was..." Sunk in the Atlantic Ocean, off VA coast, on 14 May 2005, after 25 days of tests consisting of underwater and surface simulated attacks on the ship."

Lol this is definately no underwaternuke, in those experiments the ships were either thrown in the air a good few hunred feet or partially vaporized.. i'd say this is either a custom bomb or an incredibly pumped up seamine or something like that
  • Anonymous coward on 2010-Jun-18 18:53:43 Anonymous coward said

    Homeslice.
It's a routine shock test. They moor the ship a prescribed distance from a barge heavily laden with high explosives and light it off. Everyone aboard is at Battle Stations, and you grip something solid while standing on the balls of your feet with all of your joints flexed.
