This is in fact an L-1011-385-1, tail # N726DA. This occurred on August 2nd, 1985 during an approach in bad weather. Here is a URL to the NTSB accident brief:

I can assure everyone viewing this that this is an L-1011, Delta ship no. 726, and NOT a DC-10. I was at Lockheed in Palmdale, CA when it was on the assembly line. The flight crew got blamed for the crash, naturally. They're not around to defend themselves anymore.

I concur it is an L-1011. You can see the tail engine has the distinctive S-shaped (when viewed from the side) air intake duct. The DC-10's #2 engine was built straight-through the tail.

This was a landmark windshear accident that spurred research into this deadly phenomenon. They still make us watch the computer animation of this crash during flight safety recurrent.

This was indeed Delta 191. I was working on the ramp for Delta on this night. We were watching the approaching storm and talking about how wet we were about to get when we saw the fireball. I volunteered to the scene and got there about 20 minutes after the crash. Terrible thing to see.

Pilots never had a chance. The plane weighed 510,000 pounds the water tank held 4 million gallons at 8 pounds per gallon. It weighed 32 million pounds and was moved about 4 inches from the impact.

A survivor was tossed into the cornfield and walked out of the corn. He ended up on the access road in the pouring rain and flagged a car who dropped him at the terminal. He calmly walked up to the main ticket counter to see if he could still make his connecting flight. True story.

My mother was driving on the highway where this plane crahed, she could have been clipped like some other cars. I was a few miles away and saw the storm... we lost power in our part of town for some reason when this happened.

@ Schwambly, I believe there was one other L-1011 crash. but both crashes were ruled to be weather related. the L-1011 was considered the best designed & safest airline to ever fly.

The other fatal L-1011 crash was in the Florida Everglades, west of Miami. part of the aircraft was later shwown by grund-penetrating radar to be 80' underground. She hit at over 400 kts.
