I'm an American, and I think that the AN-225 is a beautiful aircraft.
(I have been on board the AN-225 while it was on the ground for a static display.)
The Mriya is amazingly graceful at low speeds in the landing pattern. It has the agility of a much smaller aircraft.
on 2007-May-01 22:32:55 Anonymous coward said
factcheck
But the AN-225 and AN-124 do have weaknesses. Bad engines, for one.
The Lotarev turbofans are fragile. After the plane lines up for takeoff, the engines have to come to 75% power and stay there for 3 to 5 minutes, to equalize core temperatures. If not, boom! Engine failure at takeoff.

Other Antonov problems: short engine life. (1250 hours in early versions!) Very fuel hungry. Very enviromentally dirty. Cargo section not pressurized (compare to C-5 Galaxy, which is).
Good design. Not brilliant.

A few more notes. It is suggested above that the AN-225 and the AN-124 are "Russian" aircraft.
Russian companies own them today. But they are, strictly speaking, Soviet (not Russian) designs. And the factory which built the airframes is in Ukraine.
Ukrainians are absolutely not Russians!

About the Buran comment:
Buran did not "start from the top of" the -225. Buran flew to orbit on the Energiya booster. (Awesome booster!)
Buran could not go to Baikonur by truck: bad roads. It would not fit on the rail system. Moving it by air with the -225 was mandatory.
on 2007-May-02 00:15:34 Anonymous coward said
factcheck
And the real reason Buran retired: the first orbital re-entry badly damaged the thermal protection on the underside.
That system needed re-engineering before flying again. But the USSR collapsed, and the program ran out of money before the changes could be made.

An-225 is designed by Ukrainians, Antonov Design Bureau in Kyiv (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonov_Design_Bureau). Some parts are built in Russia.
The name 'Mriya' means 'dream' in Ukrainian. This word doesn't mean anything in Russian as it's different language.

I read a story about an air traffic controller at a relatively small airport where this thing landed. The takeoff was a difficult one and the controller watched the plane in its takeoff roll. He kept wondering when it was going to lift off. It just kept going and going, still firmly attached to the runway. He was just about ready to hit the crash alarm, figuring it was going to over run the end. It did finallly lift off after using EVERY FOOT of the runway. That's as close as it gets!
