I read the pilot's report on this incident. He could keep it wings (wing?) level if he maintained about 200 KIAS. Tail hook came off on landing but that was the only additional damage.

Yep, along with the F-16, F-117, and F-22, to keep the planes on the runway (equipped with arrester cables) in case of emergency. There were fantasies of even navalizing the F-16 for carrier use. The '117 and '22 hooks are hidden under plates to preserve stealth.
