As a pilot I can attest that MSL and AGL are not the same thing. I wonder if GWB knows that when it comes to taxes!

i am a pilot, and i have read the accident reports on this incident. it was, in fact, the pilots failure to set his altimeter corectly! careful what you assume, MYAUN!

This was in the Denver paper a few months ago, he didn't have his altimeter set correctly and he came out of a loop too low and couldn't recover quick enough.

His altimeter was set correctly - the error was in his calculation done before show start for the height at the top of the maneuver, he used bad data (temperture vs barometric pressure) to calculate the altitude (not AGL but MSL) needed to safely perform the maneuver.

I'm an aircraft mechanic in the Air force and believe me, we have more education than just a high school diploma. I've been in the Air Force for 18 YRS, and am STILL learning new things. Pilots graduate from college and they are done.

Hey, pilots are not "done" when they get out of college. We learn stuff on the job, and in the air.

At airshows shortly before takeoff, ground crews vigorusly massage the aircraft so that the aircraft ejaculates shortly after takeoff producing this truely spectacular effect.

One "funny" point. A major purpose of air shows is to encourage people to join the military, including potential pilots. How many people saw this and decided to sign up?
  • Anonymous coward on 2007-Aug-01 01:08:31 Anonymous coward said

    Steve Edinger
Also, there is no point in either enlisted or officers trying to suggest they are the ones who keep up on training while the other side of the house does not. Anybody who has been in the military knows training is "forever", except perhaps in times of war!

As a pilot for more than 50 years (USAF abd Coommercial carriers) I can tell you that the pilot was thinking of two things: 1. Clear the crowd, and 2, EJECT and give the airplane back to Uncle Sugar!

The most amazing thing about this is that the pilot went to work at the Pentagon after his screw up. As the old saying goes, screw up and move up!

I heard that he got an assignment to Shemya Island(you know, the FROZEN one!). He asked the Personnel officer "Are there any girls there?" The Personnel officer replied "Don't worry, there is a girl behind every tree." Then he gets there and discovers that there are NO TREES! They can always hurt you more.
